In a very short time, this has turned into a very strange year. As former students of Aberystwyth University, I know we all have the courage and optimism to adapt to the new ways of living, and that our famous “Aber Spirit” will mean we keep in touch with each other locally through the Branches, and worldwide. I have been in close contact with the University in the past weeks, as they have faced making some difficult decisions to ensure the wellbeing and behaviour of their students and the townspeople, and the academic challenges which the new circumstances have raised. We have agreed that the plans for the OSA Reunion in June, which was to be held jointly with Computer Sciences Department celebrating 50 years , will have to be abandoned this year. We will team up with Law to celebrate their centenary in 2021. Our Hon. Secretary Steve Hasson is considering the best way of managing our AGM responsibilities in different ways. We hope that all in Office in Branches and General Committee will be willing to stay in post beyond the proposed June elections this year. The Royal Welsh Show has been cancelled, so we will not have an event there. Graduation ceremonies have been postponed, but we hope that OSA volunteers will still be willing to participate once future dates are announced. We have just heard that the National Eisteddfod of Wales , due to take place in Tregaron in August with the regular Alumni Reception, has been moved to summer 2021. And the Annual meeting of Aberystwyth University’s Court has been postponed. If a new date cannot be identified in the Autumn, then it will take place as scheduled on 19 March 2021. However we are talking to the University about potential events for the autumn this year, around Founders Day or a meeting of OSA General Committee. As a Society, we send all good wishes to the Vice Chancellor and all her staff and students in these extraordinary times. Meanwhile, we can continue to support the University and its plans for breathing new life into Old College. We will keep in touch as best we can, and I personally wish good health to you and your families and friends during this difficult time.
